Cuando su padre viv\u00eda, recuerda Kou Berpa, ella y su madre eran libres de cultivar la tierra de la familia. Nadie invad\u00eda los 100 acres que Samuel Berpa pose\u00eda en el condado de Nimba, al noreste de Liberia. Kou incluso hab\u00eda plantado un grupo de \u00e1rboles de caucho, un valioso cultivo b\u00e1sico en el exuberante pa\u00eds de \u00c1frica Occidental.<\/p>\n

Pero hoy sus \u00e1rboles de caucho son ceniza, y Kou y su madre no pueden acceder a sus tierras. Cuando Samuel muri\u00f3 en 2016, los t\u00edos de Kou expulsaron a las mujeres. Talaron sus \u00e1rboles de caucho y los quemaron para venderlos como carb\u00f3n para cocinar. Cuando Kou protest\u00f3, sus t\u00edos respondieron con amenazas.<\/p>\n

\"Me dijeron que las mujeres no pueden hablar de asuntos de tierras\", explic\u00f3. \"Dijeron que no tengo derecho a hablar de tierras y que, si sigo, podr\u00edan intentar hacerme da\u00f1o\".<\/p>\n

Por desgracia, la experiencia de Kou no es infrecuente en Liberia, donde los derechos sobre la tierra y la herencia suelen pasar por tradici\u00f3n a la l\u00ednea masculina, a pesar de que la Constituci\u00f3n del pa\u00eds garantiza la igualdad de g\u00e9nero. Mientras el mundo se re\u00fane para \"Presionar por el Progreso\" en\u00a0D\u00eda Internacional de la Mujer 8 de marzo<\/a>Kou es un recordatorio de que demasiados derechos de las mujeres a la tierra y la propiedad se rigen por normas sociales regresivas. De hecho,\u00a0en m\u00e1s de la mitad de los pa\u00edses<\/a>, las mujeres encuentran obst\u00e1culos a sus derechos sobre la tierra y la herencia por ley o costumbre.<\/p>\n

Como muchas mujeres del mundo en desarrollo, Kou depende de la tierra para vivir y de su relaci\u00f3n con un familiar var\u00f3n para obtener los derechos sobre esa tierra, en este caso, su padre. Cuando \u00e9l muri\u00f3, esos derechos desaparecieron. Sus t\u00edos fueron inequ\u00edvocos: ella no ten\u00eda derecho a la tierra de su padre.<\/p>\n

\"Incluso si quiero plantar mi propio caucho, mi caucho personal, me dicen que no debo hacerlo, porque las mujeres no tienen acceso a la propiedad\", afirma Kou.<\/p>\n

En lugar de eso, Kou se vio obligada a trasladarse a otra ciudad y pidi\u00f3 prestada una peque\u00f1a parcela de tierra -menos de un acre- para plantar ma\u00edz. Paga al propietario una peque\u00f1a cantidad por usar el terreno y le da una parte de lo que cosecha. Pero es reacia a mejorar la tierra o a plantar un cultivo m\u00e1s valioso, porque sus derechos sobre ella no est\u00e1n asegurados. El arroz le reportar\u00eda m\u00e1s ingresos, pero teme que el terrateniente pueda esperar a que ella limpie la tierra y se prepare para cultivar arroz, y luego desalojarla para poder utilizar la tierra ya preparada.<\/p>\n

\"Me ver\u00eda obligada a marcharme, porque no es m\u00edo\", dijo.<\/p>\n

Trabajar esta peque\u00f1a parcela y confiar en la buena voluntad del propietario es la \u00fanica opci\u00f3n que tiene Kou, de 42 a\u00f1os, madre soltera y abuela, para ganarse la vida modestamente. Con las ganancias, espera poder pagar las tasas escolares de sus nietos Franklin, de 6 a\u00f1os, y Theo, de 3. Ella cr\u00eda a los dos ni\u00f1os mientras su hijo adulto trabaja en otra ciudad.<\/p>\n

\"No tengo a nadie m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de m\u00ed. Quiero que vayan a la escuela para que el d\u00eda de ma\u00f1ana aprendan y me mantengan\", afirma.<\/p>\n

Kou afirma que ve posibilidades de que Liberia cambie durante su vida, pero s\u00f3lo si su gobierno promulga leyes para proteger los derechos de las mujeres.<\/p>\n

\"Quiero que el gobierno haga valer nuestros derechos a tomar decisiones (sobre la tierra)\", dijo. En cuanto a los negocios de la tierra, quiero que las mujeres puedan tener una parte de la tierra como propiedad\".<\/p>\n

Mientras la asamblea legislativa de Liberia debate un proyecto de ley sobre el derecho a la tierra que podr\u00eda garantizarlo a millones de liberianos de las zonas rurales, una coalici\u00f3n de grupos locales de la sociedad civil y organizaciones internacionales como Landesa y otras trabajan para garantizar que el sue\u00f1o de Kou se haga realidad.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
