VUE D'ENSEMBLE

Women in Kenya continue to face exclusion from land ownership and decision-making. The main barriers are weak implementation of developed laws and entrenched patriarchal norms, which limit women’s participation in land governance, and retrogressive customary systems, leaving women vulnerable to land loss in times of widowhood, divorce, key decisions, and conflict, among others.

Grassroots women in rural Kenya face significant challenges due to land tenure insecurity, which directly affects their livelihoods, food security, and social standing. To ensure that laws and policies truly address the needs of rural women, it is essential to enhance their agency, leadership, and voices. Empowerment involves not only participation, but also the capacity for decision-making, access to relevant information, and the ability to contest injustices within both local and legal frameworks.

The Stand for Her Land (S4HL) campaign in Kenya builds upon this legal and policy foundation, advancing the principle that women and men are equal and must have equal access to land and property rights. Achieving true land tenure security for women thus requires full implementation and enforcement of both international obligations and domestic laws, grounded in the lived realities of Kenyan women and communities.
