GOAL<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To guarantee women in Benin, particularly rural women, have equitable, secure and recognized access to land and natural resources, by bridging the gap between the legal framework and its effective application in order to ensure their economic and social empowerment.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

OVERVIEW<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>

In Benin, although women make up nearly 70% of the agricultural workforce, fewer than 12% hold land titles. Despite the constitutional guarantee of equality and the recognition of land rights under the Land and Property Code (revised in 2017), the effective exercise of these rights remains significantly hindered by the weight of patriarchal customs, a lack of awareness regarding the law, and limited access to land documentation.<\/p>\n

To bridge the gap between formal legislation and the reality on the ground, the Stand For Her Land (S4HL) Benin coalition plans to implement a five-year strategic plan. By mobilizing over 40 civil society organizations, the coalition will strengthen the legal and advocacy capacities of local stakeholders, conduct community awareness campaigns in national languages, and engage in dialogue with traditional, legislative, and institutional authorities to bring about lasting change in land governance for the benefit of women.<\/p>\n

Community mobilization and transformation of socio-cultural norms: Raising awareness among and engaging communities, women leaders, and traditional authorities to shift discriminatory customary norms that prevent women from accessing land.\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Policy, legal, and institutional advocacy: Influencing public policy and legislation to ensure gender-responsive land governance and facilitate the dissemination of legal texts to rural women.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Capacity building and support for CSOs: Training and equipping civil society organizations and local intermediaries in areas such as land rights, legal assistance, mediation, and citizen monitoring.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
