“The Land Is Our Mother” – S4HL Kenya

Northern Vision is a community-based organization in Gotu, Isiolo in Kenya, founded by Zamzam Bonaya Boru, a climate justice advocate dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage and empowering women in her Indigenous Borana community of Northern Kenya. As a member of the Stand for Her Land (S4HL) Kenya coalition, Northern Vision works to unlock women’s potential and sustain progress by securing women’s land rights.

In communities where harmful cultural norms have historically excluded women from land ownership, Northern Vision is creating change. Program Lead Shampi Anna explains how through climate justice programs, education initiatives, and healing circles, they are helping women gain a voice in land stewardship. As community elder and Zamzam’s father Bonaya Boru states, “Women have never had rights in our culture, and yet they are the engine of everything.”

With S4HL’s support, Northern Vision is helping build a future where women lead, families thrive, and communities live in harmony with their land. As they say in the Borana language, Laftin haad nama, “The land is our mother,” so we need to protect it.
