OVERVIEW

In Zimbabwe, women’s land rights remain significantly constrained despite constitutional and statutory protections. Cultural norms, discriminatory inheritance practices, and limited enforcement of land laws often prevent women—especially in rural areas—from accessing, owning, and controlling land and other productive resources. This has direct implications for women’s economic empowerment, food security, and resilience, particularly for socially and economically marginalized groups. While policies exist to guarantee gender equality in land tenure, implementation gaps and weak accountability mechanisms continue to undermine women’s ability to claim and exercise these rights fully.

The Stand for Her Land Zimbabwe coalition works to address these legal and cultural barriers by creating an enabling environment that translates legal protections into practical gains for women. Through community mobilization, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building programs, the coalition empowers women to understand, claim, and defend their land rights. S4HL Zimbabwe also engages with policymakers and traditional leaders to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and ensure gender-responsive land governance.

By combining grassroots mobilization with advocacy for systemic reforms, the coalition seeks to transform both the social and institutional landscapes of land access, ownership, and control. Ultimately, S4HL aims to secure sustainable livelihoods for women and promote equitable development across Zimbabwe.
