OPEN LETTER IN RESPONSE TO THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY REGARDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
In May, the National Development Plan (NDP) "Colombia, world power of life" declared, for the first time in the country, a national emergency regarding gender violence, and although historically for women the mere fact of living as women implies different risks and violence, naming it as an emergency reflects the magnitude and importance that this issue deserves. Violence in our territories has left us with immense pain and suffering, which we women have confronted by coming together.
A few months ago1 life stopped when one of our companions, Eva Amaya Vidal, was taken from us by femicide. Losing a colleague is an event you never get over and yet every day we have to add more women to a list that should not even exist, Darlis (Carmen de Bolivar), Margot, Yulien, Hellen and Dulce Maria (Tulua), just in the last few weeks... The memory holds much pain with each name that we refuse to forget.
They have murdered teachers, leaders, mothers, daughters, friends, peasant women, indigenous women, Afro-peasant women, migrants... who live the violence against their territories, including the body as the first place we inhabit, from where you are not displaced, nor can you escape.
Faced with the pain that death generates when our lives are taken from us, we have woven words to untangle the knot in our hearts and push us to continue. Thus, the Coalition of Caribbean Women for Land and Territory2 decided to write a letter addressed to the women who are no longer here because they have been murdered; to those of us who are still here living day by day the situation of violence and resisting it; to our communities where many times we are not safe and to the Colombian State. It is important that the State, as a guarantor of our rights, reads it; but in case it does not, this letter is also for us, because writing is a way of healing and companionship.

To those who are no longer with us
Compañera, sister, your absence is felt every day, in those places where they tried to keep you out and in those places where your face is, but it is not you. Now you are in our voices, in every word, in every movement and process in which you do not die. Your face has a name and we refuse to let it be just another number in the news of the day.
Violent deaths should not be one of the reasons to gain strength, but the pain is so intense that it becomes dignified rage and the way to channel it is to keep fighting, because for us, no femicide makes sense. We know that on many occasions they carried their fear and pain in solitude when they were not heard, and although we want to keep them here, our ancestors have taught us to let go and heal the wounds: it was not your fault to love, to trust, to think that tomorrow would be different, to doubt that they would listen to you, to believe that you could change it, to want to escape, to be paralyzed by fear; we should have taken more care of you.
To those of us who are still here
We know of sadness and pain, but also of resistance and resilience. To those of us who are still here, to you who are reading this right now, we want to say that despite the difficulties, you are not alone. We say this from our hearts. Violence generates pain and shared feelings that we cannot and should not bear alone. You can count on us, we are on the same path together, wanting to be happy and live in peace. We know you are strong, but you don't have to resist violence alone, it is in unity that you find refuge and the path through the dignified rage.
We insist on the collective because we are not free alone, it is our voices together that break down borders. It is the liberation of the bodies of all of us that will allow the liberation of my body, of your body, of our territories. We are and will continue to be the daughters, the friends, the sisters, the mothers of those who are no longer here to continue telling their story, because only that which is forgotten dies. Here we are, a group of women -like many others who resist in every corner of the country- who struggle day by day to achieve the victory of a territory free of violence against women.
To our communities
They taught us to work in community, and for this and all our struggles we must be together, be allies, but we still do not feel their support. It is in our homes, in our streets, in the places we are denied to inhabit and even in those where we love to be that we are violated and killed. We have to understand that the territories are also ours, including our bodies, what responsibility will you assume in this action?
Violence is not normal, femicide is a crime and staying silent is not the way out, we cannot be accomplices of acts that impede our right to be free, to be alive and to enjoy ourselves. Will you be an accomplice in the face of shouting, jealousy, beatings, confinement, media mockery and the validation of violent masculinities?
We would like to tell you that when a woman is murdered or violated, a whole chain of support arises to walk by our side, because more than flowers we are mountains and biodiverse swamps that green again and again, rivers that grow when they join together; are you willing to join this force with determination?
To the State
Femicide is not only the death, it is the whole set of actions that murder women up to the moment of the lethal action. It is not enough to deal with femicide, it is an action that not only has an effect on the immediate victim, but on the lives of all of us and those who are left behind after the murder of a woman, children, families and processes. It is well known that the more they kill us, the more we will resist and the more we resist, the more violence there will be against us. How many deaths do you want to see to understand that we will not give up?
We are aware of the national and international laws that, in theory, protect women. However, we ask you to make them effective, because at some point we have all been denied our rights, we have been violated and we are not protected. It is not a new situation, it affects us every day and mobilized by this sadness and frustration we ask you to improve your institutional responses to these cases. We want to trust that they will protect us, listen to us, that they will not re-victimize us or aggravate the risky situations we face, but they have failed us again and again. So, even though there is no justice, even though impunity has been their language, we believe it is possible for this situation to change, for the institutions to uphold their duty to us, and for all of us to walk towards the same goal.
The national emergency continues until we are all safe, we will continue to fight for those who are not here, for those who are still here and for those who are coming. All of us without exception deserve to live well ("sabroso"), happy and together.

CARTA ABIERTA FRENTE A LA EMERGENCIA NACIONAL POR VIOLENCIA CONTRA LAS MUJERES
En el mes de mayo mediante el Plan Nacional de Desarrollo (PND) “Colombia potencia mundial de la vida” se declaró, por primera vez en el país, emergencia nacional por violencia de género y aunque históricamente para las mujeres el solo hecho de vivir siendo mujeres supone distintos riesgos y violencias, nombrarlo como una emergencia nos da razón de la magnitud y la importancia que este tema merece. La violencia en nuestros territorios nos ha dejado inmensos dolores y daños, a los cuales las mujeres le hemos hecho frente desde la juntanza.
Hace unos meses1 la vida se detuvo cuando una de nuestras compañeras nos fue arrebatada por feminicidio, Eva Amaya Vidal. Perder a una compañera es un hecho del que nunca te repones y, sin embargo, todos los días tenemos que añadir a más mujeres a una lista que ni siquiera debería existir, Darlis (Carmen de Bolívar), Margot, Yulien, Hellen y Dulce María (Tuluá), sólo en las últimas semanas… La memoria guarda mucho dolor con cada nombre que nos resistimos a olvidar.
Han asesinado maestras, lideresas, madres, hijas, amigas, campesinas, indígenas, afrocampesinas, migrantes... quienes viven la violencia contra sus territorios incluyendo el cuerpo como el primer lugar que habitamos, de donde no te desplazan, ni puedes escapar.
Frente al dolor que genera la muerte cuando nos arrebatan la vida, hemos tejido la palabra para desenredar el nudo que tenemos en el corazón e impulsarnos a seguir. Así, la Coalición de Mujeres del Caribe por la Tierra y el Territorio2 decidimos escribir una carta dirigida a las mujeres que ya no están porque han sido asesinadas; a las que seguimos acá viviendo día a día la situación de violencia y resistiendo a ella; a nuestras comunidades donde muchas veces no estamos seguras y al Estado colombiano. Es importante que el Estado la lea como garante de nuestros derechos, pero en caso de que no sea así, está carta es también para nosotras, porque la escritura es una forma de sanarnos y acompañarnos.
A las que ya no están
Compañera, hermana, tu ausencia se siente todos los días, en esos lugares donde intentaron que no estuvieras y en aquellos donde está tu rostro, pero no eres tú. Ahora yaces en nuestras voces, en cada palabra, en cada movimiento y proceso en el que no mueres. Tu rostro tiene nombre y nos rehusamos a que sea una cifra más en las noticias del día.
Las muertes violentas no deberían ser una de las razones para tomar fuerza, pero el dolor es tan intenso que se convierte en digna rabia y el camino para encauzarla es seguir luchando, porque además para nosotras ningún feminicidio tiene sentido. Sabemos que en muchas ocasiones llevaron su miedo y dolor en soledad al no ser escuchadas, y pese a que queremos mantenerlas acá, nuestras ancestras nos han enseñado a soltar sanando las heridas: no fue tu culpa amar, confiar, pensar que mañana sería distinto, dudar que te fueran a escuchar, creer que podías cambiarlo, querer escapar, estar paralizada por el miedo; debimos cuidar más de ti.
A las que seguimos aquí
Y es que sabemos de tristezas y dolor, pero también de resistencia y berraquera. A nosotras que seguimos aquí, a ti quien nos lees en este momento, te queremos decir que a pesar de las dificultades no estás sola. Esto lo decimos desde nuestro corazón. La violencia genera un dolor y sentir compartido que no podemos ni deberíamos llevar solas. Puedes contar con nosotras, vamos juntas en el mismo camino queriendo ser felices y viviendo en paz. Sabemos que eres fuerte, pero no tienes que resistir a la violencia sola, es en la unión donde se encuentra el refugio y el camino para transitar la digna rabia.
Nosotras insistimos en lo colectivo porque no somos libres solas, son nuestras voces juntas las que logran romper fronteras. Es la liberación de los cuerpos de todas lo que permitirá la liberación de mi cuerpo, de tu cuerpo, de nuestros territorios. Somos y seguiremos siendo las hijas, las amigas, las hermanas, las madres de aquellas que ya no están para seguir contando su historia, porque solo muere aquella que se olvida. Aquí estamos, un grupo de mujeres -como muchos que resisten en cada rincón del país- que luchamos día a día para lograr la victoria de un territorio libre de violencias hacia las mujeres.
A nuestras comunidades
Nos enseñaron a trabajar en comunidad, y para esta y todas nuestras luchas debemos estar juntxs, ser aliadxs, pero aún no sentimos su respaldo. Es en nuestras casas, en nuestras calles, en los lugares que nos niegan a habitar e incluso en aquellos donde amamos estar donde somos violentadas y asesinadas. Tenemos que entender que los territorios también son nuestros, incluyendo nuestros cuerpos, ¿qué responsabilidad asumirán ustedes en esta acción?
La violencia no es normal, el feminicidio es un delito y quedarnos calladxs no es la salida, no podemos ser cómplices de actos que impiden nuestro derecho a ser libres, a estar vivas y a disfrutar
de nuestro ser ¿serás cómplice frente a los gritos, los celos, los golpes, el encierro, la burla de los medios y la validación de masculinidades violentas?
Queremos decirles que cuando se asesina o violenta a una mujer, surge toda una cadena de respaldo para caminar a nuestro lado, porque más que flores somos montañas y ciénagas biodiversas que reverdecemos una y otra vez, ríos que cuando se juntan crecen; ¿están dispuestos a juntarse decididamente a esta fuerza?
Al Estado
El feminicidio no es sólo la muerte, es todo el conjunto de acciones que van asesinando a las mujeres hasta el momento de la acción letal. No basta con atender el femicidio, es una acción que no solo tiene un efecto en la víctima inmediata, sino en la vida de todas nosotras y quienes quedan tras el asesinato de una mujer, niñxs, familias y procesos. Es bien sabido que entre más nos maten, más nos vamos a resistir y entre más resistencia hagamos, más violencia va a haber contra nosotras ¿cuántas muertes quieren ver para comprender que no nos vamos a rendir?
Conocemos las leyes nacionales e internacionales que, en teoría, nos protegen a las mujeres. Sin embargo, les solicitamos que se hagan efectivas, porque en algún momento a todas se nos han negado nuestros derechos, nos han violentado y no estamos protegidas. No es una situación nueva, nos afecta día a día y movilizadas por esta tristeza y frustración les pedimos mejoren sus respuestas institucionales frente a estos casos. Queremos confiar en que nos van a proteger, escuchar, en que no nos van a revictimizar o agudizar las situaciones de riesgo que enfrentamos, pero nos han fallado una y otra vez. Entonces, aunque no haya justicia, aunque la impunidad haya sido su lenguaje, creemos posible que esta situación cambie, que las instituciones nos cumplan y que todxs caminemos hacia el mismo objetivo.
La emergencia nacional sigue hasta que todas estemos a salvo, seguiremos aquí en pie de lucha por las que no están, por las que seguimos y por las que vienen. Todas sin excepción merecemos vivir sabroso, felices y juntas.
